I’m learning, growing, and trying to find out where it leads. There are no limits to what you can create when you decide to release your creative flow. How it all began? Without meaning to, I think I designed my first outfit when I was seven years old. I was in the second grade at Laurelwood Elementary School, in San Jose, CA, at the time. One day, after daydreaming about one of my favorite shows, Wonder Woman, I decided to DIY an exact replica of her fashion forward outfit, right in the middle of class. While everyone else was face forward, listening to the teacher’s lecture, I drew, colored and cut an entire outfit, and then taped it to myself.
When the teacher caught me wearing the new outfit, she scolded me for not listening while in class. None-the-less, she adored the creativity, she was in awe of my craftsmanship, and asked if I would share it with the class. I proudly stood up on my chair and let the whole class see my hand cut, paper outfit; a full stars and stripes bodysuit, accessorized with a golden lasso, star marked, bulletproof head and wrist bands. I…was…(sung like the made for TV theme song) WONDER WOMAN!
After the “fashion show,” I was ordered to write one hundred sentences; “I will listen to my teacher, not do art in class.” I was a chronic daydreamer so not sure that fixed me. Thankfully, as traumatic as that was, I never lost sight of the artist in me. Years later, creativity still flows regardless of the medium.
